Dive RAID International has added another manufacturer-sanctioned product training course to its technical-diving suite, in the shape of the XCCR “expedition-grade” rebreather. Made by iQSub Technologies in the Czech Republic, these CE-approved units have been around for some 10 years.

“This machine is a serious tool for serious divers,” says RAID of the model, each unit of which is tested to 150m before leaving the factory. “The design facilitates assembly and maintenance without special tools, and the controlling software has been written to reduce human error and increase usability.”

One of the two canister models is made of Delrin and the other Teflon-coated marine-grade hard anodised aluminium, with diluent and oxygen tank capacities ranging from 2-7 litres.

The XCCR uses a radial scrubber with a manufacturer-guaranteed six-hour duration as standard, and both oxygen and diluent manifolds have multiple outlets.

The head has advanced air-flow paths designed to eliminate condensation on the O2 cells, says RAID. The Shearwater SOLO board in the head serves readings from three O2-sensors, solenoid firing, CO2-reading, high-pressure readings on tanks and head-up display control.

Should a cable be severed, the unit is said to go on working and to maintain PPO up to surfacing.

Electronics

The Shearwater electronics are described as having very low power consumption and provide long-term battery life. There is a DiveCAN Petrel2 controller on the left and a DiveCAN head-up display on the bail-out valve.

O2 sensors and a built-in CO2 sensor are placed in the cartridge. PPO readings are electronically separated so that if a short circuit occurs on any sensor, cable or computer, the reading on the other computer is unaffected.

Two independent replaceable lithium-ion 18650 batteries are located in sealed compartments out of the breathing loop to prevent contamination in the event of leakage.

“There were a few things missing from our technical-diving offerings and we definitely believe that bringing the RAID touch to the XCCR helps to plug one of those gaps,” says the training agency.

“The iQsub XCCR is a leader in rebreather design and function, and we are extremely happy to offer training on this excellent unit to RAID divers through our network of experienced RROs and instructors.” Contact your local RAID dive centre for details.
